Interview prep: Solutions Consultant / Sales Engineer

Pre-Sales interviews test both technical credibility and presentation skill, since the role sits right between the product and the buyer's technical stakeholders.

Expect a live demo or technical scenario as part of the process, not just a conversational interview, and it may not even be on the company's own product.

What interviewers are assessing

What good looks like in a Solutions Consultant / Sales Engineer interview.

  • Your ability to run technical discovery, not just deliver a canned demo
  • How you've supported security review or a proof of concept in a live deal
  • Whether you can partner with an AE without taking over the commercial conversation
  • Whether you tell a story with a demo or just walk through features, hiring managers consistently say this is what separates a genuinely strong Solutions Consultant from someone who can only demo competently
  • Whether you know when to pause and follow a customer's comment down a new path, rather than sticking rigidly to a planned script
  • For a Founding Solutions Consultant role, comfort building a demo environment from scratch

What to expect

A typical interview process.

  1. Stage 1

    Recruiter screen

TalentStack checks the balance of technical depth and presentation skill this role needs, and which end of that spectrum the specific business is hiring for.

  2. Stage 2

    Hiring manager interview

A conversation on your technical background and the deal types you've supported, security review, proof of concept, or pure demo delivery.

  3. Stage 3

    Live demo or technical scenario

This is the stage that decides most Pre-Sales interviews. Some hiring managers will explicitly let you pick any product, including one you use in daily life, specifically to see whether you can build a narrative and create excitement, not just recite features. Treat whatever you demo as a story with a beginning, a problem, and a resolution.

  4. Stage 4

    AE pairing interview

A conversation with an AE to assess how you'd partner on a live deal without stepping on the commercial relationship, this working relationship is central to the role.

  5. Stage 5

Final with sales or engineering leadership

A closing conversation on scope, whether you'd support a wide range of deals or specialise, and how the role sits between sales and product.

The demo story test

Turning a demo into a narrative, not a feature list

  1. Set up the problem

Open with the specific pain point, don't launch straight into the interface.

  2. Take them on a journey

Walk through the solution as a sequence of moments that resolve the problem, not a menu of features in order.

  3. Read the room as you go

If they react to something, pause and go deeper there instead of pushing on with your plan.

  4. Land the excitement

Close by connecting back to the problem you opened with, and what's different now.

Smart questions to ask them

Questions our recruiters consistently coach candidates to ask.

  • Where does the demo environment currently live, and how much ownership would I have over it?
  • How technical do discovery calls typically get before a demo is booked?
  • What's the split today between Sales Engineer-style technical demos and Solutions Consultant-style discovery and storytelling?
  • What does the handoff to Professional Services look like once a deal closes?

Getting the Pre-Sales role: what to do, what to avoid

Do this

  • Treat any demo exercise as a story to tell, not a feature list to recite, whatever the product
  • Prepare to pause and follow an interesting comment down a new path rather than sticking rigidly to your plan
  • Bring a specific example of supporting a security review or proof of concept, not just general demo experience
  • Clarify early how hands-on you'd be on RFPs and technical scoping, versus what Professional Services owns

Avoid this

  • Don't default to a flat, feature-by-feature walkthrough, this is the single most common way candidates lose this interview
  • Don't take over the commercial conversation in the AE pairing round, the interview is partly testing whether you know your lane
  • Don't assume every Pre-Sales role is equally technical, some are demo and storytelling first, others need deep integration knowledge, ask which

Salary expectations

What actually moves Solutions Consultant / Sales Engineer compensation.

  • Pre-Sales comp usually sits closer to AE base pay with a smaller variable component, reflecting a support rather than closing role
  • Specialised technical stacks or verticals can command a premium, worth flagging your specific technical background clearly
  • Founding Pre-Sales hires often see more equity given the ambiguity of building the function from scratch

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a sales background to move into Pre-Sales?
No, some of the strongest Pre-Sales hires come from technical or customer-facing engineering roles. We look for the underlying skill set, not just prior titles.
Why would an interviewer ask me to demo something that isn't even their product?
It isolates the skill they actually care about, can you build a narrative and get someone genuinely interested, separate from your familiarity with their specific software. A well-told demo of something completely unrelated can outperform a flat walkthrough of the actual product.
What's the real difference between a good Sales Engineer and a great Solutions Consultant?
A good Sales Engineer can demo competently and answer technical questions accurately. A great Solutions Consultant does that and also knows when to abandon the planned agenda because the customer just said something important, and follows it.
