Forward Deployed Engineers Are Eating the Solutions Engineer Market Most SaaS Sales Teams Haven't Noticed
By Dan Richards, Head of BD
TLDR: The Forward Deployed Engineer has gone from a Palantir quirk to the most in-demand technical customer-facing role in software. Indeed data shows FDE postings up around 729% year on year, a September census counted 1,333 live FDE roles across 565 companies, and OpenAI launched an entire standalone Deployment Company in May built around them. The reason is simple: enterprise AI deals are no longer won in the demo, they are won or lost in deployment, and buyers have stopped paying for pilots that never reach production. For SaaS hiring managers, this quietly rewrites the Solutions Engineer brief, changes what a good enterprise AE looks like, and means the technical GTM talent pool you are fishing in is now being raided by AI labs paying frontier-lab equity. The companies that adapt their hiring profile now will win the deals. The ones still hiring demo jockeys will keep losing renewals.
From Palantir Quirk to Hottest Title in Tech
Palantir invented the Forward Deployed Engineer years ago: an engineer who does not build the core product, but instead sits inside the customer's environment and writes the production code that makes it actually work. For most of the last decade nobody else cared. That has changed fast. A live census published by Plank on 12 September 2026 counted 1,333 FDE postings across 565 companies, from frontier labs to seed-stage YC startups, with Indeed showing roughly 729% year on year growth in the title. Only 9% of those openings sit at the labs and Palantir. The long tail, growth-stage software companies hiring their first one or two FDEs, is where the title is spreading fastest.
The more interesting number is the broad one. Count every solutions, implementation and field engineer doing essentially the same job under a different title and Plank puts the market above 20,000 roles globally. In other words, the FDE is not a new job. It is the Solutions Engineer job, rebuilt for a world where the product only delivers value once someone wires it into the customer's messy reality.
Why the Demo Stopped Closing Deals
Enterprise buyers have been burned. S&P Global Market Intelligence found the share of companies abandoning most of their AI initiatives before production jumped from 17% to 42% in a single year, and Gartner expects more than 40% of agentic AI projects to be cancelled by the end of 2027, with legacy system integration named as a core reason. Every AI product demos beautifully. What a CIO now wants to know is who is going to make it work against their permissions model, their data warehouse and their compliance team.
That shifts where the deal is actually won. The pre-sales motion used to be discovery, demo, technical validation, close, then hand over to implementation. In AI-heavy SaaS the proof of value is the deployment, and the renewal (plus the expansion that makes the unit economics work) depends on it landing. The post-sale is now the sale.
The Money Doesn't Lie
In May, OpenAI launched the OpenAI Deployment Company, a majority-owned standalone business backed by TPG, Advent, Bain Capital, Goldman Sachs, SoftBank and others, whose entire purpose is embedding FDEs inside enterprises. It bought the applied AI consultancy Tomoro to bring roughly 150 FDEs and deployment specialists in on day one. When the most valuable AI company on the planet decides deployment deserves its own balance sheet, that is a market signal, not a hiring fad.
Pay has followed. Plank's data puts the median posted FDE base at $193K, and by Series B the median base is $235K, within touching distance of a frontier lab. At the labs themselves, equity takes total packages for mid to senior FDEs at OpenAI and Anthropic into the $350K to $550K range and beyond. Paraform reports that a full FDE search typically takes 8 to 12 weeks. That is the same pool your best Solutions Engineers swim in, and it is now being priced like engineering, not like pre-sales.
Who's Actually Hiring Them
This is not just an AI lab story. Aircall is hiring a Director of Forward Deployed Engineering and AI GTM Lead across San Francisco, Seattle and New York, alongside FDEs inside its AI Solutions Engineering team. Salesforce is hiring Agentforce FDEs. Adobe, Notion, Stripe, Rippling, ServiceNow, Databricks and Snowflake all appear in the September census. Look closely at the Aircall title: the FDE function is being wired directly into GTM, not engineering. That is the tell. Established SaaS businesses bolting AI onto their platform are discovering their existing SE teams were built to win evaluations, not to ship agents into production.
What This Means for Your GTM Hiring
First, the Solutions Engineer brief needs rewriting. The SE who wins on polished demos, strong RFP answers and good discovery is still valuable, but in AI-heavy products they are now table stakes. The profile that wins can build a working proof of concept against the customer's real data in a week, is comfortable in Python and APIs, and frames their track record in outcomes delivered in production, not deals supported. If your SE interview is a demo and a panel, you are testing for the 2022 version of the role. Add a live scoping exercise on an underspecified customer problem and a hands-on build task, and watch how differently your shortlist ranks.
Second, the enterprise AE profile shifts with it. When deployment is the proof of value, the AE who wins is the one who sells a mutual deployment plan rather than a licence, qualifies hard on data readiness and internal ownership, and brings the FDE or SE into the deal early enough to shape scope. AEs who treat technical resources as demo support will overpromise, hand over a deal nobody can deploy, and watch it churn at renewal. Screen for AEs who can talk credibly about how their last three deals actually went live.
Third, be honest about comp and retention. Your strongest technical SEs now have a credible exit to a title that pays more and carries more status. If you are not benchmarking SE packages against FDE ranges, not offering a clear technical career path, and not giving them real build work, expect them to leave. And the biggest mistake we see hiring managers make is the opposite one: renaming an implementation or support role as FDE to attract talent, then paying and scoping it like a junior post-sales job. Candidates see through it in the first call.
The practical answer for most Series A to C SaaS businesses is not to copy Palantir. It is to hire technical GTM people who can cross the line between selling and shipping, pair them properly with AEs, and measure them on customers live in production rather than technical wins logged in the CRM. Get that profile right and deployment becomes your competitive advantage instead of your churn risk.
